Who Gets to Decide What We Deserve?

Scripture: Romans 12:9-21, 13:1-10

“Mercy, detached from justice, grows unmerciful.” – C.S. Lewis

In a world where we question/cry for/demand justice, there is something that we often forget: we are not called to judge what people deserve, what their “just deserts” are. After all, how can we, fallible humans that we are, stand in judgment?

It is our responsibility to remind all that love is the fulfillment of the law. Justice and wrath remain in God’s hands. We are called to love and show mercy.

We need to be aware that we are not allowing a desire for justice to make us wrathful or vengeful, for then we would find ourselves in the wrong as well.

Justice is getting what we deserve. Mercy is what God has given us.
