Scripture: Exodus 20:1-20
We have to be wary of what we are commemorating or committing to public memory.
It is dangerous to objectify people and literally put them up on a pedestal. Our good cannot be divorced from our bad.
If we create idols to our own glory, we run the danger of losing sight of God.
It is difficult for people in our society to interact with God. It is hard for them to understand/conceptualize Him.
We are called to love God with all of us, to honor Him with all of us.
We can honor the good acts that people do without creating statues and monuments and images. The greatest honor and commemoration of good acts is to carry them on, to continue them.
