In Matthew 5, Jesus lays out what is called sin, as well as the admonition to “be perfect as your Father is perfect”. Perfection? Us? Really?
We as a society often look for rules, a road to follow to what we want, but many found Jesus’s “rules” for salvation to be too harsh, such as the rich young man who could not bring himself to sell all he had and leave it behind to follow Christ.
Jesus called Himself the “fulfillment of the Law”. And the fulfillment of the Law is Love. “If you love your neighbor, you will fulfill the requirements of God’s law (Romans 13:8).” Love for God and love for others is the Law.
Every commandment stems from a loving spirit. To love others means we will not act hatefully and hurtfully towards them. It’s not what you do but why you do it.
If we are to be perfect as God is perfect, and God is Love, then we are perfected by Love.
